Etching Machine for Nameplates, Signage & Decorative Metal Panels

Etching is the standard process for producing stainless steel nameplates, brass plaques, copper signs, and aluminum decorative panels. This page covers material selection (304 vs 316 vs brass), the 6-step process, color-fill and finishing, and how to specify the right etching equipment for nameplate volumes from 100 to 100,000 plates per month.

The 6-Step Nameplate Etching Process

  1. Sheet preparation. Cut 304/316 stainless to oversize blank. Standard thickness: 0.5-1.5 mm for nameplates; 1.0-3.0 mm for architectural signage.
  2. Surface prep. Alkaline degrease (5% NaOH, 60°C, 2-3 min) → rinse → dry. Optional light micro-etch for resist adhesion.
  3. Photoresist. Laminate dry film (25-50 μm) at 105-115°C, or liquid photoresist for fine features. Use negative resist for through-etch, positive for half-etch.
  4. Exposure & develop. Expose UV (50-150 mJ/cm²) through artwork. Develop in 1% Na2CO3 at 30°C for 30-60 sec.
  5. Etch. Ferric chloride (38-42°Bé) at 45-50°C. Etch time: 4-12 min for 0.05-0.20 mm depth.
  6. Strip & finish. Strip resist in 3-5% NaOH (60°C, 2-3 min) → rinse → color fill (optional) → clear coat (optional).

Color-Fill & Finishing Options

  • Epoxy paint fill: Most common. Pour paint into etched recess, wipe surface clean. Cures hard. Available in all RAL colors.
  • Enamel fill: Premium look. Higher temperature cure. Used for awards and plaques.
  • Two-tone stainless: Etch through colored PVD titanium layer to reveal silver stainless. No paint, very durable.
  • Clear protective coat: Anti-fingerprint / UV-resistant lacquer for outdoor nameplates.
  • Mirror polish: 2B → BA → 8K mirror finish for premium brand plates.

Cost Per Nameplate

  • Material: $0.05-0.15
  • Photoresist: $0.05-0.10
  • Etchant: $0.01-0.03
  • Labor: $0.10-0.25
  • Color fill: $0.10-0.30

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best material for etched nameplates?

304 stainless steel is the industry standard — durable, corrosion-resistant, easy to etch, and supports color fill in any RAL color. For outdoor or marine use, 316L is recommended. For premium awards and plaques, brass (C26000) produces a rich golden look. For budget indoor use, anodized aluminum works well.

How deep should I etch a nameplate?

Standard depth: 0.05-0.15 mm. Below 0.05 mm, the etched feature is too subtle to read clearly without color fill. Above 0.20 mm, etch time becomes impractical (over 25 minutes per plate). For tactile premium nameplates, 0.10-0.15 mm is the sweet spot — clearly readable, fast to produce, and color-fillable.

Can I etch colored stainless steel nameplates?

Yes. Two methods: (1) Etch first, fill etched recess with enamel or epoxy paint in any RAL color, wipe surface clean. (2) Etch through colored PVD titanium coating to reveal silver stainless. Method 1 is more common and lower cost. Method 2 produces premium two-tone finish with no paint.

What is the smallest text size I can etch on a nameplate?

Practical minimum is 1.5-2 mm character height. Below 1.5 mm, the etched character is hard to read and difficult to color-fill cleanly. For sub-1mm text (serial numbers, fine print), use laser marking instead of etching. For tactile Braille text, minimum dot height is 0.2 mm with 2.5 mm dot spacing.

What is the typical lead time for etched nameplates?

Standard order: 7-15 working days for 100-1,000 plates. Rush order: 3-5 working days. Sample: 1-3 days. Lead time depends on artwork preparation, plate size, etch depth, color fill complexity, and shipping destination.

How do I clean and maintain etched nameplates?

Routine: wipe with soft cloth and mild soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners. For outdoor nameplates, rinse with water periodically. Recoat clear protective lacquer every 3-5 years for outdoor use. For brass plaques, apply anti-tarnish coating every 2-3 years.

How much does an etched nameplate cost?

For 50×100 mm logo plate, 0.1 mm depth, 304 stainless, 1.0 mm thick, 1000-batch: $0.30-0.85 per plate. Smaller plates: $0.10-0.30. Larger architectural panels (300×600 mm): $5-15 each. Color fill adds $0.10-0.30 per plate. Custom shapes and tooling (artwork film) add $50-300 one-time setup.
